The purpose of the Rural Health Scholars Program is to:
  1. Identify rural-interested medical students with leadership potential early and throughout their medical school career
  2. Enroll these schoalrs as student members of the National Rural Health Association
  3. Plan and conduct an annual Rural Health Scholars Retreat
  4. Send at least two students each year to either the Rural Health Policy Institute in Washington DC or to the annual meeting of the National Rural Health Association

Each school year, students from all of Ohio's medical schools are invited to apply. These "Rural health Scholars" are invited to participate in a retreat in Logan County. At this weekend institute, participants address significant issues in rural health policy, rural medical education, rural practice, and/or rural research.

Regional and/or national leaders in rural health are invited for the purpose of enlarging the students' understanding of rural health issues and rural practice, with both its rewards and challenges. Following the retreat, two students are chosen each year to attend one of the two premier events of the National Rural Health Association, either the Rural Health Policy Institute, focused on advocacy for rural health, or the Annual Meeting of the organization, including its student chapter.
